Description

This is the first of three projects I completed for my sculpture class this semester.

Made entirely from plaster and painted with acrylics, this is a piece of wet driftwood with a small suculent plant growing out of it.

OMG THIS TOOK FOREVER. Carving the driftwood took about 15 hours and then carving the tiny leaves (which had to be done individually and then glued together because of the nature of plaster) took about 12 hours. I also made a "wet sand" base with mdf, spray adhesive and sand from my yard(took another 2 hours), but placing the piece out in the sand itself is a way better way of displaying this piece.

Anyway, the driftwood is supposed to symbolize how I view myself; it's been on a long journey, it's worn and weary, but still has some natural beauty and can be very strong and useful. The succulent symbolizes the new beginnings I have been struggling to make as I've moved across the country and started a new school and new life here in Corpus Christi.
It's been a struggle for me as my new school only accepted some of my credits and has different core requirements so I basically wasted two years going to school and have to take another two years here instead. As well, I've bounced through three different jobs here before finally finding one that works for me, so that was stressful. On top of that it's been really difficult for me to make friends here as the majority of the people who live in this area are of very different backgrounds/political alignments and have very different interests than I do.
